Keep On Shining: A Jewellery Cleaning Guide

Picture this: you have just purchased a beautiful new piece of fine jewellery, a classic diamond tennis bracelet, a pair of elegant diamond earrings, or a glistening pendant.

No matter what piece of jewellery you have, you will leave our store with a big smile and beautiful new addition to your collection that you can treasure for a lifetime.

However, after a few years of wearing this precious item, you notice its sparkle isn't quite as breath-taking as it once was. Although it is still a beautiful piece, it has lost a little of that shine that drew you to it all those years ago.

Although the widely known phrase 'a diamond is forever' does ring true, it is surprising how dull diamonds, gemstones and metals can become if they're not cleaned regularly.

With our complimentary annual jewellery cleaning service, once you book the service, we will advise the timeframe so you can plan to start wearing it again with pride.

Here at PSJ, we proudly offer a complimentary annual jewellery cleaning service for any piece purchased from our store.

That means that if your diamonds lack sparkle, or you would like a little shine and polish for a special occasion, you can pop into our shop here in Dublin with the pieces you would like cleaned, and we will professionally restore your jewellery's shine.

Once you book the service, we will advise a timeframe so you can plan to start wearing it again with pride.

We can confidently assure our customers that their pieces will retain their sparkle and shine for a lifetime, at no extra cost, provided that the item was initially purchased with us.

We, of course, offer cleaning services for items that were not purchased from us, and you can get in contact with a member of our team so that they can advise a cost.

 Jewellery Cleaning

Fall in love with your fine jewellery all over again and remember how special it made you feel when it was brand new.

We pride ourselves on that jewellery from Paul Sheeran Jewellers will truly sparkle for you for a lifetime. Jewellery looks its best when cleaned and restored to its former dazzling glory.

Ultrasonic Jewellery Cleaning

It is essential to have any fine jewellery pieces in your collection thoroughly and carefully cleaned by professionals at least once every year to keep them in their best condition.

Our talented in-store jewellers and goldsmiths use a variety of methods for jewellery cleaning. The first step in the cleaning process is the use of an ultrasonic cleaning machine.

This machine looks somewhat like a small bath where the jewellery is submerged into a liquid, usually an ammonia-based cleaning solution, using a hooks rack.

This liquid is kept hot but not boiling, ensuring the most effective clean. These machines emit high-frequency sound waves – ranging from 20 to 400kHz – through the cleaning solution, which creates little bubbles or 'voids' that latch on to any dirt, debris or stains on the diamonds and metals.

These bubbles then rapidly collapse, which generates tiny shock waves that disrupt any unwanted particles. The high-frequency sound waves then pull the dirt particles away from the jewellery and bring them to the surface. This process is known as cavitation.

These ultrasonic pieces are only used on more durable pieces such as diamonds, sapphires or rubies. Professionals will know not to use them on softer, more porous gemstones as they can erode, weaken or damage them.

Ultrasonic cleaners are very effective for removing stubborn pieces of grime and dirt that prevent your jewellery from emitting its original sparkle. They are usually used on pieces with hard-to-reach contamination and require a bit more TLC.

Polishing and Cleaning Jewellery

The next step in cleaning fine jewellery is polishing it so that the surface of all metals is smooth, shiny and scratch-free.

First, the piece is emeried. This is done using emery sticks that look like large, boxier nail files and small abrasive wheels that spin.

This process removes a few microns of metal from the surface, which means all scratches and marks are removed and ensures the metal's surface is entirely even.

If the jewellery is badly damaged, the jewellers will file them down to remove large grooves or dents.

Our jewellers use a professional polishing machine for the polishing part of this procedure. The wheel of the machine spins bristle brushes, cotton mops and felt mandrels which look a little bit like bigger cotton swabs, and the jewellery is held up against them.

These various pieces of equipment buff the metal to make it look gleaming; however, jewellers can also use them to create different finishes such as sandblasted, brushed or hammered.

Steaming and Cleaning Jewellery

The last step in professional jewellery cleaning is the steam-clean. This is done using a steam machine in our workshop.

Essentially it is a machine controlled by a pedal that, when pushed, produces a strong gust of steam. The jewellery pieces are held with forceps under the steam. They're rotated until all of the pieces have been cleaned.

There is no chance that any grime, dirt or grease is left. This last piece in the puzzle of jewellery cleaning ensures that the piece is restored to its glistening original self and further brightens the metal to achieve a stunning finish.

Cleaning Jewellery at Home

We recommend that any treasured piece of fine jewellery, especially something truly special like an engagement ring, wedding band or eternity ring, is cared for daily.

Regular inspection and cleaning of your jewellery at home are crucial to maintaining the sparkle of your pieces.

To keep them as clean as possible, use a gentle soap and soft brush to remove any dirt or grime from daily wear. Avoid harsh chemicals and cleaning products as these could damage your jewellery.

If you are unsure or questioning how to keep your jewellery in perfect condition, please seek advice from our expert team. They're happy to guide you or come into our store, where you will experience the most luxurious jewellery cleaning in Dublin.
