Sapphire: September Gemstone

Welcoming the month of September we would like to introduce you to sapphire: the birthstone of this month and the gem of the 5th and 45th anniversaries.

This stone has decorated the robes of royalty members for centuries. Traditionally, sapphire symbolises truth, faithfulness and nobility and together with ruby and emerald it’s one of the most important coloured gemstones.

If you are looking at piece of sapphire jewellery you should know that its colour has the most determinant on it’s value. The most highly valued blue sapphires are velvet-blue to violet blue. It’s also important to know that blue sapphires typically have some inclusions but with better clarity than rubies.

Sapphires capture jewellery buyers with their aura of romance and it have become an increasingly popular choice for engagement rings, especially after Prince Charles offered a sapphire ring as engagement ring to Princess Diana.

A sapphire ring is a really versatile piece of jewellery to wear, regardless of event, clothing or manicure colour choice.

Sapphires are durable stones, second only to diamonds and they are resistant to chipping, scratching and cracking.

These factors make them ideal for wearing through most daily activities without the danger of damage and so a sapphire ring can be a good choice as an engagement ring.

The stone may have different shapes such as round, oval, pear, marquise or square. The more facets present in the stone, the more sparkle the ring will give off.

Besides blue sapphire in nature it’s possible to find yellow, pink, violet, green and orange sapphires. They are known as fancy sapphires and they are less available than the blue ones. They might be the perfect option for women who want something out of the ordinary.

At Paul Sheeran Jewellers we have a wide selection of sapphire rings and sapphire jewellery, click here to see the collection.
