FAQs

Watch - Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best luxury watch brand to buy as a first watch?

This is entirely a personal preference. We advise doing a little research on each brand to help guide your decision. Personal budget will at times dictate brand or model choice as prices vary, but enjoy the research process and find the watch of your dreams. The luxury watch industry is fascinating and once you buy your first watch, you'll never look back.

Do you resell or exchange watches?

Generally we don't resell or exchange watches and we would only sell new watches from each of the brands we stock, however if you would like to discuss further don't hesitate to contact us.

How often should I get my watch serviced?

We recommend keeping a close eye on the performance of your watch and if you see anything that is not what you'd consider normal performance, get in touch with us and we'd be happy to advise and arrange a service. It is worth noting that in most instances, your watch will need to be checked by us every 1-2 years, this is perfectly routine and depending on the watch brand, falls under the brand warranty.

Typically how long are the waiting lists for new releases?

It very much depends on the brand and how they managed production and availability. Some models are created for specific markets and exclusive occasions however we work very closely with each brand Maison to maximise allocations for the models we know will prove most popular in the Irish market. We recommend getting in touch with our watch team who can advise on how long you'd expect to wait for your preferred model.

Engagement Rings - Frequently Asked Questions

How much should be spent on an engagement ring?

While the age-old tradition states you should spend three months’ salary on an engagement ring, we at Paul Sheeran Jewellers believe that the price tag by no means represents how much you love your partner. So no pressure, there really is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, just like there are no one-size-fits-all rings!

Our engagement ring collection includes a range of options at varying price points. When you come to us to find an engagement ring, we work with you to understand your partner’s likes, dislikes and styles, sharing with you our extensive collection of options in various styles and ultimately, helping you choose the perfect one.

We also offer a finance option, allowing you to spread the cost of your engagement ring purchase over interest-free monthly instalments. Speak to our team for more information.

What price do engagement rings start at?

The price of a ring will depend on a variety of factors and the '4 C's' (clarity, cut, colour and carat) are a good guide. Each of these will impact price and very often it is mistakenly assumed that the size of the stone will be the most influential factor in the price which is not necessarily the case. For example a 3 carat diamond which is graded as having a poor clarity or cut rating will likely be less expensive than a 1 carat diamond which is graded as colourless with an excellent cut rating. Our highly experienced team are trained diamond graders and are adept at working with all budgets and requirements to ensure every customer leaves our store with the ring of their dreams.

Is it best to buy both the engagement ring and wedding band together?

It really depends on the individual, buying both at the same time would be more convenient as it would mean you would complete the process in less time however typically choosing the engagement ring is more time-consuming and requires a more in-depth discussion around styles, budget, lifestyle etc. Our recommendation would be to split the process, concentrate on the engagement ring first and fully enjoy the experience, then approximately 6 months before the wedding get in touch to make an appointment to start the wedding band journey.

How do I know what size engagement ring to buy?

The best way to ensure you buy the right sized engagement ring is to first find out your partner’s size. Of course, when planning a surprise engagement, this might seem more tricky, but there are a number of ways to get your answer without ruining the surprise.

A guesstimate is an option, but there is always a risk of it not fitting so we recommend asking a friend or family member to find out from your partner for you, or, using a ring from their existing collection that you know fits their ring finger well. If you can get your hands on an existing ring, our team will be able to measure it and advise you on the perfect size.

If there are any issues with the ring size after purchase, we will happily resize it.

How often should I clean my engagement ring?

An engagement ring holds both financial and sentimental value, so you must ensure it is looked after well, this includes regularly cleaning the ring. We recommend that an engagement ring is thoroughly cleaned at least once a year.

As it is likely your engagement ring will be worn daily, it is bound to experience some wear and tear over the years. To prevent this, you should regularly inspect your ring and take gentle care of it using soft household soaps, for example.

However, for a more thorough clean, it is best to get it done professionally. For this reason, we offer a free annual cleaning service for a lifetime with every diamond engagement ring purchase. The service entails a close examination of the ring to ensure no diamonds have become loose or fallen out, and a polish to remove any visible marks on the ring.

How do I choose the right engagement ring?

With so many options, choosing the right engagement ring can be a daunting task. Of course, it’s always best to have had some input from the ring receiver, but if the proposal is going to be a complete surprise, we can help you make the right choice.

First, you should have a budget in mind as this will give you a good starting point to help narrow your choice. There really are no rules for how much you should spend on an engagement ring, so set a budget that works for you and your lifestyle.

Next, you should ensure you know your partner’s ring size. While it might be difficult to get this information directly from them, you can use jewellery that already exists in their collection to gauge the right size.

The last factor to consider is your partner’s likes, dislikes and style. This will determine your choice of metal and diamond or gemstone details. Rings vary from statement pieces to subtle, classic designs. Both are equally as beautiful and high quality; it all depends on what the wearer of the ring prefers.

The more information you can tell us here, the easier it will be for us to help you choose the right engagement ring.

Wedding Rings - Frequently Asked Questions

How much should you spend on a wedding band?

Wedding bands can become a secondary priority in the run up to the big day and are sometimes mistakenly considered more of a 'must-do' than an investment purchase. They are a hard-working piece of jewellery as they are worn daily so our recommendation is to consider all the options in terms of durability of metal and weight to ensure you get a lifetime of wear from your ring. Our in-store team will help guide you on the most suitable options dependent on your budget.

How to know which style will best suit my engagement ring?

The only way of knowing this is to try a selection of styles on with your engagement ring. Very often engagement rings are 'wed-fit' which means they have been designed with an accompanying wedding band in mind so the choice is very straightforward. Also the choice of metal is important, mixing platinum with yellow gold is a continual trend which adds a point of difference to a ring stack but needs to be tried on together to be fully appreciated.

How do I clean my wedding band?

We recommend that a wedding band is regularly cleaned in order to preserve its condition for the entirety of your marriage. Plain band wedding bands can be kept clean with a mild soap or jewellery cleaner, and a professional polish once a year to ensure the metal remains shiny and free from scratches.

Diamond wedding bands should be regularly serviced by a specialist jeweller, to ensure their delicate details remain secure and unaffected by daily wear.

Which metal is best for a wedding band?

This is an entirely personal preference but a decision that is best made after trying on different metal band colours with the engagement ring, for example a yellow gold wedding band paired with a platinum band on the engagement ring, creates a beautifully contemporary aesthetic. It is also worth noting, many brides pre-empt wearing an eternity ring in the future so choosing a wedding band that will compliment both an engagement and eternity ring is important.
