HISTORY OF SOLITAIRE
ENGAGEMENT RINGS

Although the act of gifting and wearing an engagement ring had been common practice for centuries, it wasn’t until 1477 that they began to be decorated with diamonds. This was following the first recorded diamond engagement ring which was commissioned by Archduke Maximilian of Austria for wife-to-be, Mary of Burgundy. The ring featured a number of diamonds arranged to form the shape of the letter ‘M’.

However, a solitaire engagement ring refers to a design with just a single stone. It was much later when these simple yet beautiful designs became the popular engagement ring of choice. Following the 1940s advertising campaign by diamond specialist, De Beers, which framed the luxurious stone as a possession to be held on to forever, the gifting of solitaire engagement rings peaked, and little has changed ever since.

WHY CHOOSE A SOLITAIRE
ENGAGEMENT RING?

Understandably, solitaire engagement rings are incredibly popular, and have been for some time. The simplicity of their design makes them the ideal choice for almost every type of style and preference.

They encompass a timeless, elegant and classic style and regardless of how trends have evolved over the years, you are assured that the singular diamond design will remain desirable.

As a piece of jewellery designed to be worn every day for the rest of your life, you will never grow tired of looking at it and remembering its significance of it in your lifetime. Visit Paul Sheeran Jewellers to view the most extensive collection of solitaire engagement rings in Ireland.

TYPES OF SOLITAIRE ENGAGEMENT RINGS

Despite their simplicity, there are numerous types of solitaire engagement rings to choose from. Firstly, you have a choice of band. Our collection features a range of 18ct yellow gold, platinum and 18ct rose gold options, all of which help highlight the supreme quality of our diamonds. For example, 18ct yellow gold is the traditional metal type for engagement rings. When paired with a solitaire diamond, it creates a classic and timeless look. Platinum engagement rings are a more recent trend and serve to showcase the brilliance of the diamond in a more contemporary setting.

There is also a wide selection of diamond cuts such as solitaire engagement rings with emerald, marquise, oval, princess and round cuts, each creating a distinctive design which looks stunning when worn.
