The history of IWC Schaffhausen Pilot's watches

IWC Schaffhausen has a long standing association with aviation, which began in 1936 with the release of a special watch for pilots. The initial design included all the expected features of a watch made for this purpose, including large, legible hour markers, resistance to fluctuations in temperature and anti-magnetic properties.

Over a decade after its first Pilot's watch, IWC responded to an invitation for tender by the British Government by producing a service watch for the Royal Air Force. Up until 1981, the Mark 11 Navigator’s wristwatch was being used by personnel in the RAF and in other Commonwealth nations.

Having proven popular, IWC spent the following decades developing and improving its Pilot's watches. This included the introduction of superior calibres, reimagined designs and innovative materials, all in order to make the Pilot's the best in class instrument for aviators.

With each new addition to the family, both standards and desirability have been raised. Today, the Pilot's line features an impressive range of watches, which can be categorised into the following collections: Classic, Top Gun, Spitfire, Le Petit Prince and Antoine de Saint Exupéry. Each is home to iconic models that help tell the brand’s unique story, as well as special editions that sit pride of place in some of the world’s most coveted luxury watch collections.
