How to Choose the Right Engagement Ring
With so many options, choosing the right engagement ring can be a daunting task. Of course, it’s always best to have had some input from the ring receiver, but if the proposal is going to be a complete surprise, we can help you make the right choice.
First, you should have a budget in mind as this will give you a good starting point to help narrow your choice. There really are no rules for how much you should spend on an engagement ring, so set a budget that works for you and your lifestyle.
Next, you should ensure you know your partner’s ring size. While it might be difficult to get this information directly from them, you can use jewellery that already exists in their collection to gauge the right size. Our experts are always on hand to help with measurements, too.
The last factor to consider is your partner’s likes, dislikes and style. This will determine your choice of metal and diamond or gemstone details. Rings vary from statement pieces to subtle, classic designs. Both are equally as beautiful and high quality; it all depends on what the wearer of the ring will want.
The more information you can tell us here, the easier it will be for us to help you choose the right engagement ring.
Design Your Own Engagement Ring
Our in-house team of goldsmiths and jewellery designers also offer a bespoke service, enabling you to create your or your partner’s dream engagement ring.

How much should you spend on an engagement ring?
While the age-old tradition states you should spend three months’ salary on an engagement ring, we at Paul Sheeran believe that the price tag by no means represents how much you love your partner. So no pressure, there really is no one-size fits all answer to this question, just like there are no one-size-fits all rings!
Our engagement ring collection includes a range of options at varying price points. When you come to us to find an engagement ring, we work with you to understand your partner’s likes, dislikes and styles, sharing with you our extensive collection of options in various styles and ultimately, helping you choose the perfect one.
We also offer a Flexi-Fi option, allowing you to spread the cost of your engagement ring purchase over 12 months of interest free instalments. Speak to our team for more information.
How much are engagement rings?
Engagement rings can vary in price depending on their size, composition and detailing. Taking into account the variance of the famous four Cs (cut, colour, clarity, carat) will impact cost, for instance, a 2 carat diamond will be more expensive than a 0.5 carat diamond.
At Paul Sheeran our stunning collection ranges in price, starting around €2,000 with prices increasing accordingly depending on the specification. Our design service, allowing you to create your or your partner’s dream bespoke ring, will also help you maximise your budget.
Do you buy an engagement ring and a wedding ring?
Eventually, yes, however an engagement ring typically comes first and is often the pricier purchase.
Some couples may choose to purchase both types of ring together for a variety of reasons. For instance, if you or your partner intend to continue wearing both rings after the wedding, it’s best to ensure they sit right with each other, whether that be the cut and shape, or metal type and quality for example.
Other couples may choose to wait between purchases due to the length of the engagement. This way, they can save money for the wedding day. Or, if the proposal is going to be a surprise, partners may wait until after to purchase their wedding bands together.
Ultimately, the choice is yours, but here at Paul Sheeran, we can help you choose the perfect option for both.
How do I know what size engagement ring to buy?
The best way to ensure you buy the right sized engagement ring is to first find out your partner’s size. Of course, when planning a surprise engagement, this might seem more tricky, but there are a number of ways to get your answer without running the surprise.
A guesstimate is an option, but there is always a risk of it not fitting so we recommend asking a friend or family member to find out from your partner for you, or, using a ring from their existing collection that you know fits their ring finger well. If you can get your hands on an existing ring, our team will be able to measure it and advise you the perfect size.
If there are any issues with the ring size after purchase, we will happily resize it.
How often should you clean an engagement ring?
An engagement ring holds both financial and sentimental value, so you must ensure it is looked after well, this includes regularly cleaning the ring. We recommend that an engagement ring is thoroughly cleaned at least once a year.
As it is likely your engagement ring will be worn daily, it is bound to experience some wear and tear over the years. To prevent this, you should regularly inspect your ring and take gentle care of it using soft household soaps, for example.
However, for a more thorough clean, it is best to get it done professionally. For this reason, we offer a free lifetime’s six monthly cleaning service with every diamond engagement ring purchase. The service entails a close examination of the ring to ensure no diamonds have become loose or fallen out, and a polish to remove any visible marks on the ring.
